Hot, hot, hot for Husaberg Enduro Factory Team at EWC Rnd 6
September 2nd, 2010
Marking the re-start of the world championship after it’s summer break the Greek event was certainly anything but easy with the brutal heat and demanding dry terrain providing plenty of challenges. With dust a major problem, riders competed one per minute – instead of the usual two a minute – in an attempt to make racing safer. Welcomed by the riders it made for two very long days.
Looking to improve his results in the Enduro 2 class, but knowing that he’s always found it difficult to perform at his very best in Greece, Joakim Ljunggren finished the opening day less than pleased with his 10th place result before improving on day two with a well deserved fourth place result. “It’s been a mixed weekend for me,” admitted the newly crowned Swedish Enduro Champion. “I’ve been riding here since ’05 and I’ve never been able to race at my best. I don’t know why, maybe it’s the terrain. I just can’t find the speed needed to do well in the enduro test. I felt good but the times weren’t coming like I wanted them to.”
Although one of four special tests ridden each lap the long enduro test was largely where the event’s results were decided. “I didn’t have any problems on the other tests, just on the enduro test. During the first day I just wasn’t as fast as I needed to be. The second day was better, much better really. I felt my riding was improved and my times were faster. I want to be challenging for the podium but at least I was able to improve things on day two.”
Valtteri Salonen was another Husaberg team rider that found the Greek event tough, ending the sixth round of the EWC series with blood pouring from his right elbow having crashed on the enduro test. Unable to make any impression on the E2 class leaders Valtteri set some impressive test times, but like many riders suffered with water entering his bike’s air box on the enduro test.
